Gabriela and Paul’s Fabulous Wedding in Chicago
Des Plaines (ZIP codes 60016, 60017, 60018 and 60019) sits along the Des Plaines River right next to O’Hare, which makes it one of the most convenient places in the Chicago area for weddings with out-of-town guests. It’s about 18 miles from my Chicago location.
Des Plaines weddings range from parish ceremonies with banquet receptions to hotel weddings near the airport. The city’s restored downtown theater and riverside parks give portraits more character than many couples expect.
This guide covers Des Plaines’ history, its best portrait settings, and how I plan a wedding timeline around guests flying in.

LOCAL GUIDE
A typical Des Plaines wedding: getting ready at an airport-area hotel, ceremony at a local parish, portraits downtown and at Lake Park, then a banquet or hotel reception.
Traffic near O’Hare can be unpredictable; I build generous buffers between locations.
The theater marquee looks best at dusk, so I plan a short stop before or after dinner.
Lake Park, home to Lake Opeka, is a convenient green space with water and walking paths. It’s ideal for wedding-party portraits close to downtown.
The Des Plaines River Trail, lined with Cook County forest preserves, offers shaded, natural settings just minutes away.
I check current park and preserve rules for photography before your date.

Every day is different. We’ll adjust this around your ceremony time, venue, and sunset.
Couples choose Des Plaines for convenience. O’Hare is minutes away, hotels are plentiful, and the Metra Union Pacific Northwest Line stops downtown.
The city also has a revitalized downtown with the restored Des Plaines Theatre, plus parks and forest preserves along the river.
For big families and destination guests, Des Plaines makes travel simple, which means more energy for the celebration.
Des Plaines takes its name from the Des Plaines River, which runs through the city, and grew in the 1800s as a railroad town.
In 1955, Ray Kroc opened his first McDonald’s franchise in Des Plaines, a piece of history the city is still known for.
The Des Plaines Theatre, built in the 1920s, was restored and reopened in recent years and is now a centerpiece of downtown.
Des Plaines couples often marry at local parishes such as St. Mary’s, then celebrate at banquet halls, hotels near O’Hare, or event venues in Des Plaines and Rosemont.
Hotel weddings near the airport keep everything under one roof for guests who are flying in.
Des Plaines is in Cook County; the suburban Cook County courthouse offices in Rolling Meadows and Skokie are both nearby for your marriage license.

Lake Park and the river trail turn green; spring evenings are mild by the water.
Long summer evenings bring golden light over Lake Opeka.
The river corridor glows with fall color in October.
The theater marquee lit against snow makes a festive winter portrait.
Des Plaines is one of the easiest places in the Chicago area for guests flying in. Many hotels sit just minutes from O’Hare, and some offer shuttles to the airport.
For couples, that means fewer travel worries and more relaxed guests. I recommend reserving a hotel block early and scheduling a shuttle to the ceremony so guests arrive about 20 minutes early.
Welcome bags at the hotel and a simple timeline card help guests navigate the day.
If many guests are arriving on the wedding day, consider an afternoon or evening ceremony to allow for flight delays.
From a photography standpoint, having everyone nearby makes family photos easier to schedule and complete.

Yes. The Metra Union Pacific Northwest Line stops in downtown Des Plaines.
No. Des Plaines is within my no-travel-fee area.
The marquee and downtown streets are public; dusk is the best time for photos.
Des Plaines borders Park Ridge and Mount Prospect, with Niles and Rosemont nearby. In the northwest suburbs I photographed Jessica & Mike’s wedding at Inverness Golf Club.
The Des Plaines Theatre’s restoration brought new life to downtown, and its marquee is now one of the best portrait backdrops in the northwest suburbs. At dusk, when the marquee lights up and the sky still holds color, I bring off-camera lighting so your faces stay bright while the theater glows behind you.
Downtown’s streets, the Metra station, and nearby plazas add an urban touch for candid wedding-party photos. Because downtown is compact, a theater stop can fit easily between the ceremony and the reception.
In winter, early sunsets mean we can catch the marquee lights before dinner and still have you back for cocktail hour.
Combining the theater with Lake Park or the river trail gives your gallery both city energy and natural calm.
Many Des Plaines weddings bring together large families and multiple generations. I prepare a family photo list with you before the wedding, group people in a set order, and ask one relative from each side to help gather everyone. This keeps family photos fast, so you can get back to your guests. For banquet receptions, I coordinate with the venue and DJ so grand entrances, toasts, and parent dances flow smoothly.

“Gia is amazing – when she is directing a photo shoot, she provides perfect instructions and sets up nice shots. Most importantly to me, she is amazing at being a fly on the wall – she captured hundreds of excellent candid shots (one below included) without anyone really noticing she…”

“Gia helped me plan the perfect proposal, showing flexibility and adapting to changing timelines. The photos she took beautifully captured the candid reaction from my fiancé. She also took fantastic post proposal photos for us. The price is also more reasonable than some other proposal sites.”
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Kevin H., Google review
“What an incredible experience! I used Gia for a surprise engagement photo shoot and boy, did she show up and bring all the big guns!! She arrived at the location early and was ready, recording video as well as taking photos before, during, and after! She was incredibly knowledgeable about…”
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Michael B., Google review
“For me, photography is more than a job, it is also my passion in life. As I think my images show, I love to photograph most of all happy people in exquisite settings. I take most of my photos in a photojournalistic way and my approach to wedding photography is that of a narrator, and my style is a mix of photojournalism and creative portraiture. To that end, I’m more interested in capturing the moment, rather than a fake smile, and so, after many years of experience, I know when to capture life as it happens without restraint.”
