Jenny & Phil: Romantic Wedding in Chicago
Jenny and Phil’s Romantic Wedding in Chicago
Evanston is the first lakefront city north of Chicago and about 8 miles from my Chicago location on Buena Avenue. It mixes university energy, historic mansions, and long stretches of Lake Michigan shoreline, which makes it one of the most versatile places for wedding photos on the North Shore.
Just south of Evanston, on the same lakefront, I photographed a surprise proposal at the tip of the Loyola Beach pier, hiding in plain sight near the water until he dropped to one knee. That stretch of shoreline is part of what makes Evanston weddings so special.
This guide covers Evanston’s history, its best portrait settings, and how I plan a timeline around the lake and Northwestern’s campus.

The lakefill path gives you open water with the Chicago skyline in the distance on clear days.
A small, enclosed garden on Northwestern’s campus that feels private even on busy days.
The historic lighthouse and its grounds are a classic North Shore backdrop.
Just south of Evanston in Rogers Park, I photographed a surprise proposal at the tip of the Loyola Beach pier, hiding in plain sight near the water until he dropped to one knee.

LOCAL GUIDE
Campus trees bloom and the Shakespeare Garden comes alive; spring lake breezes keep things cool.
Long summer evenings bring soft light over the lake and the skyline view from the lakefill.
Fall color on campus and along the lakefront parks is beautiful in mid to late October.
Snow on the lighthouse grounds and campus buildings gives a crisp, classic winter look.
Couples choose Evanston because it offers city convenience with lakefront beauty. Guests can arrive on the Metra Union Pacific North Line or the CTA Purple Line, stay downtown, and walk to restaurants and venues.
It also has an unusual range of settings within a few blocks: a historic lighthouse, formal gardens, a university campus, and sandy beaches.
And for couples who met at Northwestern, coming back to campus for portraits is a meaningful part of the day.
Evanston was named after John Evans, one of the founders of Northwestern University, which was established here in 1851. The university’s lakefront campus remains the heart of the city.
The Grosse Point Lighthouse, completed in 1873, still guards the lakefront on the city’s north end, and the surrounding grounds are a classic North Shore backdrop.
Near downtown, the historic Dawes House, once home to U.S. Vice President Charles G. Dawes, reflects the grand homes built along the lake in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Evanston has many historic congregations and chapels, including Alice Millar Chapel on Northwestern’s campus. Church and chapel ceremonies usually have photography guidelines, which I confirm ahead of time.
Receptions range from downtown hotels and restaurants to private clubs and event spaces near the lake. Downtown venues keep everything walkable for guests.
Evanston is in Cook County, so you can apply for your marriage license through the Cook County Clerk, including the suburban office in nearby Skokie.

Every day is different. We’ll adjust this around your ceremony time, venue, and sunset.
A typical Evanston wedding: getting ready at a downtown hotel, ceremony at a church or chapel, portraits on campus and the lakefront, then the reception. Distances are short, so two or three portrait locations are realistic.
Campus can be busy during the school year, especially on game days and graduation weekend, so I plan portraits around the academic calendar.
Downtown parking is limited on weekends; a shuttle or rideshare for the wedding party keeps things simple.
Evanston’s beaches, including Lighthouse Beach near the Grosse Point Lighthouse, are managed by the city and can have seasonal access rules and fees. I check current access for the beach we choose.
Sand portraits are best in the last hour before sunset, when the water turns soft and pastel. Comfortable shoes for the walk and a quick change back for photos make it easy.
If it’s windy, the dunes and trees near the lighthouse give shelter and a green backdrop.
Northwestern’s campus is one of the most beautiful settings in Evanston, with Gothic-style buildings, the lakefill, and gardens. It’s an active university, so be respectful of students and events, and check the current campus guidelines for photography before your date.
The lakefill path, east of the main campus, gives a rare view of the Chicago skyline across the water. On clear evenings it’s one of the most dramatic backdrops on the North Shore.
The Shakespeare Garden, designed with hedges and flower beds, feels secluded and works well for intimate portraits, even with a small wedding party.
If your wedding falls on a busy campus weekend, the lakefront parks south of campus are a calmer alternative.

Yes. The Metra Union Pacific North Line and the CTA Purple Line both serve Evanston.
Yes, including a surprise proposal on the Loyola Beach pier, just south of the city line.
Evanston borders Chicago’s Rogers Park to the south, Wilmette to the north, and Skokie to the west. See my Loyola Beach pier proposal and the North Shore overview.
Beyond campus and the beaches, Evanston has quieter gardens and historic streets that are perfect for portraits. Merrick Rose Garden, in a small park near downtown, is especially beautiful in June when the roses peak, and it’s a calm place for a first look or a few family photos.
The neighborhoods near the lake are full of grand homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s. A walking portrait along these tree-lined streets has an elegant, timeless feel without needing a formal venue. Please be respectful of private property and keep to sidewalks and public parkways.
Downtown Evanston adds a city touch, with storefronts, cafés, and the train viaducts that give strong lines for creative portraits. In the evening, the lights downtown create a warm, glowing background.
With so many options so close together, Evanston is one of the best places on the North Shore to get a varied gallery without spending much time in the car. I’ll help you choose the two or three settings that best match your style and your venue.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ JP D., Google review
“For me, photography is more than a job, it is also my passion in life. As I think my images show, I love to photograph most of all happy people in exquisite settings. I take most of my photos in a photojournalistic way and my approach to wedding photography is that of a narrator, and my style is a mix of photojournalism and creative portraiture. To that end, I’m more interested in capturing the moment, rather than a fake smile, and so, after many years of experience, I know when to capture life as it happens without restraint.”
