Photojournalistic wedding photography documents your wedding as a true story, capturing moments as they happen with almost no direction.
Documentary Wedding Photography That Tells Your Day as a Story
A wedding photojournalist is a photographer who captures the photos spontaneously to emphasize the moments of a wedding and the emotions of people. A great wedding photojournalist presents the story of the day through photos.
There is no need to go through checklists of poses, no abrupt stop from celebration just to take a photo. The photojournalist’s job is to record what happens without direct posing or lighting setup. The goal is to be as unobtrusive as possible while capturing the event with little or no interference.
Photojournalistic wedding photography is by definition an unplanned, unobtrusive type of photography which captures best the most important moments on your wedding day.
Capturing the decisive moment in everyday life as well as wedding moments is crucial in photojournalistic style photography. It is the art of making people relaxed and at ease around the camera, it requires, from the photographer, blending in at parties and being close to invisible.
It’s what most couples like and desire today, and as a Chicago wedding photographer I am here to make sure you get exactly what you want.
Photojournalism vs. Candid: What’s the Difference?
The two words are often used together, but there is a real difference. Candid wedding photography is about individual unposed moments. Photojournalistic wedding photography is about the sequence: how one moment leads to the next, so that when you open your album it reads like a story with a beginning, a middle and an end.
A photojournalist does not only photograph the kiss. They photograph the nervous hands before it, the reaction in the front row during it, and the laughter right after. That context is what turns good pictures into your story.
Your Wedding Day, Told in Six Chapters
This is how I think about a documentary wedding day when I plan your coverage:
- The morning: the details, the getting ready, the people who show up early to help.
- The anticipation: the dress going on, the letters, the last minutes before the first look or the aisle.
- The ceremony: the vows, but also the faces watching them.
- The in-between: cocktail hour, family reunions, the quiet walk to portraits.
- The celebration: entrances, toasts, first dances and the dance floor.
- The ending: the last dance, the send-off, the two of you finally alone.
Each chapter gets its own wide shots for context, close-ups for emotion and details that set the scene. That’s the difference you see when couples flip through a photojournalistic custom wedding album.
Documentary Wedding Photography in Chicago: Real Examples
The best way to understand this style is to see a full wedding day. These love stories were photographed start to finish in a documentary way:
- Tasia and Christopher at The Library Conference Center
- Renne and John at St Andrews Golf and Country Club
- Brittney and Colin at Boulder Ridge Country Club
- Maria and Robert’s Chicago winter celebration
You can also read real love stories captured by a documentary wedding photographer for more on why couples choose this approach.
Questions to Ask a Photojournalistic Wedding Photographer
- Can I see two or three full wedding galleries, not just highlights?
- How much of the day do you direct, and how much do you simply document?
- Will you personally photograph my wedding? (I always do. I photograph every wedding I book myself.)
- How do you handle family formals without losing the documentary feel?
- How do you work in dark venues and churches where flash isn’t allowed?

How much does photojournalistic wedding photography cost in Chicago?
My full-day packages run $2,950 to $4,950 with up to 10 hours of coverage, unlimited photos and full copyrights.
Do you photograph every wedding yourself?
Yes. I personally photograph every wedding I book, with more than 600 weddings over 20 years.
Photojournalistic Wedding Photography FAQ
Is photojournalistic the same as documentary wedding photography?
Yes. Both terms describe a storytelling approach where the photographer observes and records the day as it unfolds rather than staging it.
Will we still get posed photos?
Yes. Even in a documentary wedding, I set aside a short time for family groups and portraits of the two of you. Everything else is documented as it happens. If posed portraits matter a lot to your family, read about traditional wedding photography.
How many hours of coverage do we need to tell the full story?
For the full six chapters, most couples book coverage from getting ready through the main reception events. You can compare hours and packages on my packages and prices page.
