Carmen & John: Greek Orthodox Wedding in Chicago
Carmen and John’s Graceful Wedding in Chicago
Wicker Park (ZIP codes 60622 and 60647) is all murals, vintage storefronts, historic mansions, and the elevated 606 trail. It’s perfect for couples who want urban, creative wedding photos with real character, and it’s about 5 miles from my Chicago location.
Nearby on the Northwest Side, I photographed Joanna and Bruce’s ceremony at St. Hyacinth Basilica and Lauren and Nicholas’s wedding at Greenhouse Loft, both featured as love stories on my site.
This guide covers Wicker Park’s history, its signature settings, and how I plan a city wedding day here.

LOCAL GUIDE
Wicker Park takes its name from Charles and Joel Wicker, who donated land for the neighborhood’s central park in 1870.
After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, wealthy families built grand homes along Hoyne Avenue and nearby streets, earning the area the nickname “Beer Baron Row” for the brewers who lived there.
The Flatiron Building at Milwaukee, North, and Damen, completed in 1913, and the Northwest Tower, now The Robey hotel, anchor the neighborhood’s famous six-corner intersection.
Couples choose Wicker Park for personality. Murals, historic architecture, independent shops, and the 606 give portraits an artistic, energetic feel you can’t get in the suburbs.
It’s easy for guests, with the CTA Blue Line at Damen and hotels like The Robey right in the neighborhood.
And the area’s lofts and restaurants make great venues for modern, relaxed celebrations.
The fountain and Victorian homes around the park for a classic look.
The elevated trail gives skyline glimpses and long leading lines.
The Flatiron Building and street murals for energetic, urban portraits.
Trees around the park bloom and the 606’s plantings come alive in spring.
Summer brings street festivals, patios, and long golden evenings on the 606.
The park’s trees and the 606’s landscaping turn warm colors in October.
Snow on the Victorian mansions and park fountain makes a cozy urban winter scene.
Wicker Park couples often marry at historic churches on the Northwest Side, such as St. Hyacinth Basilica in nearby Avondale, where I photographed Joanna and Bruce’s ceremony.
Receptions take place at lofts, restaurants, and event spaces in Wicker Park and Logan Square, including Greenhouse Loft, where I photographed Lauren and Nicholas’s wedding.
Wicker Park is in Chicago and Cook County; apply for your marriage license through the Cook County Clerk downtown.
A typical Wicker Park wedding: getting ready at The Robey or a nearby loft, ceremony at a Northwest Side church or the venue, portraits on the 606 and around the park, then a loft or restaurant reception.
Weekend afternoons are busy; early morning or weekday evenings give quieter streets and murals.
Parking is tight; rideshare or a shuttle keeps the wedding party moving.
Lofts and restaurants in Wicker Park and Logan Square give receptions an industrial-chic or intimate feel. I photograph the space before guests arrive and use large windows for natural-light portraits.
Exposed brick, plants, and string lights photograph beautifully with a little added light.
Greenhouse Loft, where I photographed Lauren and Nicholas’s wedding, is a great example of how a light-filled loft can shine.

Every day is different. We’ll adjust this around your ceremony time, venue, and sunset.
Wicker Park’s murals change often, so I scout current walls before your wedding and pick ones that match your colors and style.
The 606 gives long sightlines, railings, and glimpses of the skyline, perfect for walking portraits and wide, cinematic images.
The historic mansions along Hoyne Avenue add elegance; please stay on public sidewalks and respect residents.
At dusk, the Flatiron Building and Robey tower glow, and the six-corner intersection becomes a vibrant backdrop for night portraits with off-camera lighting.
Mixing the park, the 606, and the streets gives your gallery a full story of the neighborhood.
On weekend afternoons it can be. Early morning or a weekday evening gives you the murals and the 606 with far fewer people.
Yes. The Blue Line stops at Damen, in the heart of the neighborhood.
No. Wicker Park is about 5 miles from my Chicago location.
Yes. Joanna and Bruce at St. Hyacinth Basilica and Lauren and Nicholas at Greenhouse Loft, both on the Northwest Side.
Wicker Park borders Bucktown to the north, Ukrainian Village to the south, and Logan Square to the northwest, with Lincoln Park a short drive east. See Joanna & Bruce at St. Hyacinth and Lauren & Nicholas at Greenhouse Loft.
The intersection of Milwaukee, North, and Damen is the heart of Wicker Park. Historic buildings, independent boutiques, record stores, and cafés create a vibrant, artistic energy that shows in portraits.
Wicker Park has long been a home for artists and musicians, and that creative spirit lives on in its murals, galleries, and music venues. For couples who love art and culture, it’s a natural fit.
A short walk with your wedding party through the neighborhood can produce fun, candid images full of personality: laughing on the sidewalk, crossing the street, or posing in front of a favorite mural.
Engagement sessions, included in my Silver, Gold, and Platinum packages, are especially popular here: murals, the 606 at golden hour, and a drink at a neighborhood bar to celebrate.
Some of Chicago’s most spectacular churches are a short drive from Wicker Park. St. Hyacinth Basilica in Avondale, where I photographed Joanna and Bruce’s ceremony, has a grand interior and towering front doors that make a dramatic backdrop for ceremony and family photos.
Historic churches often have rules about where a photographer can stand and when flash can be used. I confirm these with your officiant ahead of time and use fast lenses to capture the warm, natural light inside.
After the ceremony, the church steps are a classic spot for a quick portrait with your wedding party before heading to Wicker Park for urban portraits.
Pairing a historic church ceremony with a modern loft reception gives your gallery a striking contrast between tradition and city style.

“For me, photography is more than a job, it is also my passion in life. As I think my images show, I love to photograph most of all happy people in exquisite settings. I take most of my photos in a photojournalistic way and my approach to wedding photography is that of a narrator, and my style is a mix of photojournalism and creative portraiture. To that end, I’m more interested in capturing the moment, rather than a fake smile, and so, after many years of experience, I know when to capture life as it happens without restraint.”
